Is Teeth Whitening Safe? What San Diego Patients Should Know

Yes — research and clinical studies consistently show that teeth whitening under a dentist’s supervision is safe for your enamel. Many dentists consider it the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. But “under a dentist’s supervision” is doing real work in that sentence. Here’s what patients should understand.
How whitening works
Professional whitening gels use hydrogen peroxide (or carbamide peroxide, which breaks down into it). As the peroxide breaks down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin and bleaches the stain compounds — without changing the structure of the tooth. That’s why properly supervised whitening doesn’t “weaken” or “strip” enamel, a persistent myth.
Why professional whitening is safer than drugstore products
Three differences matter:
- Fit. Custom trays (or in-office isolation) keep the gel on your teeth and off your gums. One-size-fits-all strips and trays leak — which is where most gum irritation comes from.
- Screening. Whitening only lightens natural tooth structure. It won’t change crowns, veneers, or fillings, and it can’t fix discoloration caused by decay or a dying nerve — problems that need diagnosis, not bleach. A quick exam first prevents disappointing (or misleading) results.
- Strength with supervision. Professional gels are stronger, so results arrive in days instead of months — with sensitivity managed properly.
What about sensitivity?
Temporary cold sensitivity during whitening is the most common side effect. It disappears within one to three days of finishing treatment, and a desensitizing toothpaste helps. If you already have sensitive teeth, tell us — we’ll adjust the gel strength and wear schedule.
Who should NOT whiten?
Whitening isn’t recommended for children under 13 or for women who are pregnant or nursing. And if your discoloration is gray rather than yellow, or concentrated in a single tooth, see us first — those patterns often signal something whitening can’t fix, where veneers or bonding may be the right answer instead.
In-office or take-home?
Both are safe and effective. In-office whitening delivers several shades of improvement in about an hour — ideal before an event. Custom take-home trays reach similar results over one to two weeks and make touch-ups easy for years afterward.
