How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?
By Dr. Hamid Kheradmand, DDS — K Dental, San Diego
The short answer: every six months for most people — and every three to four months if you’re managing gum disease. Here’s the reasoning, and how to tell which schedule fits you.
Why six months is the standard
Plaque — the sticky bacterial film that causes both cavities and gum disease — hardens into tartar (calculus) faster than most people realize. Once it hardens, no toothbrush or floss can remove it; only professional instruments can. Six months is roughly the interval at which tartar buildup, even in a clean and healthy mouth, warrants professional removal — and it pairs each cleaning with an exam that can catch small problems while they’re still small and inexpensive.
Who needs cleanings more often?
You may benefit from a three-to-four-month schedule if any of these apply:
- You’ve been treated for periodontal (gum) disease. Gum disease can be halted but not fully reversed, so periodontal maintenance visits are what keep it from progressing.
- You smoke or use tobacco — a major accelerator of gum disease.
- You have diabetes, which raises gum-disease risk in both directions (each condition worsens the other).
- You get cavities frequently or have a strong family history of decay.
- You wear braces, aligners, or have extensive dental work that traps plaque.
What a cleaning actually does
A professional cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar above and below the gum line, polishes away surface stains, and noticeably freshens breath — persistent bad breath is usually a gum-health signal, not a mouthwash deficiency. Patients are often surprised how much brighter their teeth look after nothing more than a thorough cleaning; for deeper discoloration, professional whitening is the next step.
Does insurance cover cleanings?
Almost always. Most dental plans cover two preventive cleanings and exams per year at or near 100% — making preventive care the closest thing to free dentistry you’ll ever get. Skipping covered cleanings and later needing a crown or root canal is the most expensive trade in dentistry.
The bottom line
If you’re healthy: twice a year. If you’ve had gum trouble, smoke, or have diabetes: every three to four months. And if you’re overdue right now, the best time to reset the clock is this week — book online or call K Dental at (619) 461-9494.
